The Battle of Little Bighorn, also known as Custer's Last Stand, took place on June 25-26, 1876, in southern Montana near the Little Bighorn River. The battle was fought between the United States 7th Cavalry Regiment, led by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer, and Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors.
The battle map shows the area where the two sides clashed. The United States 7th Cavalry approached Little Bighorn from the east, intending to attack the Indian encampment from that direction. However, their plan went wrong when Custer divided his regiment into three smaller groups, sending two of them to attack the Indian camp from the south and north. In doing so, Custer left his own group outnumbered and outflanked by the warriors.
The Indian warriors were led by Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, among many other chiefs, and they were successful in repelling the Cavalry's attack. Custer and his group were soon overwhelmed and killed, along with all of the soldiers under his command.
The battle map shows the various locations where the different groups fought, including Reno Hill, Custer Hill, and Last Stand Hill, where Custer and his men made their last stand. Today, the site of the Battle of Little Bighorn is a National Monument and is preserved as a memorial to the soldiers who fought and died there.
